How the Part D Penalty Works
The Part D penalty applies if you went 63 or more days without creditable prescription drug coverage after first becoming eligible for Medicare Part D.
The penalty is calculated as 1% of the national base beneficiary premium for each month you went without creditable drug coverage, rounded to the nearest $0.10.
The penalty is permanent and is added to your Part D plan premium each month. It is recalculated annually as CMS sets a new national base beneficiary premium.
✓ VA Drug Coverage Protects You from This Penalty
VA prescription drug coverage IS considered creditable coverage for Part D. If you have VA drug benefits, you can delay Part D without a penalty.
